    A black and white farmhouse

This beautiful Shelter Island farmhouse by New York design firm Schappacher White is bright, fresh and the perfect remedy for the rather sluggish humidity we've been experiencing lately. It just looks cool, airy and the perfect retreat from a hot summer day. Crisp black and white is a strong theme carried throughout the home through elements ranging from the bold black and white stripes in the main living area, to a weathered black wooden rocking chair to a romantic black chandelier in dining area. Having this simple theme running through the whole space really lends a sense of continuity and flow, making it visually more relaxing despite the dramatic contrast.

These powerful black and white stripes pack alot of punch, yet are balanced with simple white walls and 'naked' windows, making the space still seem airy and fresh.

Pickled white floors (always a favourite Scandinavian trick)  soften the space but are balanced by strong black pieces.

A dramatic black chalkboard adds an element of fun and playfulness, the kitchen just seems instantly inviting and friendly.

The coziest little nook to spend the entire afternoon, pouring through a favourite new book and enjoying the summer breeze...

Gorgeous farm house. So chic but yet still preserves it's integrity and casualness. The nook is where I'd want to be! Great post ~

Absolutely love black & white decor like this - the white lifts and the black anchors. The perfect marriage really.
Think that yes, the Scandi DNA plays a part here, and I do enjoy the clean & crisp lines of simplicity.

    Lovely lovely dear friend.

i love what just a little bit of black can do to ground a space. one would think it would make a space heavy or dark, but if done right, as in the images you showed, bits of black are completely fabulous!

I had a client once tell me that that is exactly what she was looking for... a black and white farmhouse...they ended up buying a Victorian house with no black and white :)

nice to see, I just received my white slip covered sofa, arm chair and ottoman a few days ago. I love it! My living room now is black and white with turquoise and apple green as complimenting colors. Looks great! Will post some pictures tomorrow. Take care.

The fourth picture with the whitewashed/limed looking floors look soooo great. It's not a typical choice, so it's even more appealing! And that rocking chair...hello?! L-o-v-e it ALL :)
